Spirited Away [SUB] (2001) Review

Image
Spirited Away [SUB] (2001) 8.5/10 Hello and welcome to another movie review. Today, I’ll be tackling one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever made. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Spirited Away was released on July 20, 2001, with Miyazaki’s animation studio Studio Ghibli producing the film. Upon its release, Spirited Away was critically acclaimed by both general audiences and critics, and was a massive box office hit. The film was even awarded Best Animated Film at the Oscars. At this point in time, I have seen this movie a couple of times now, and although I enjoy it, I still fail to see why this was so popular. In Japan, it makes sense seeing as this has heavy Japanese folklore mixed into its story. But abroad? The movie has phenomenal animation, but I just don’t see how this got so popular. Anyway, let’s begin. This is the story of Chihiro, a 10 year old girl who is moving to a new home with her mother and father. On the way to the new place, the family t...

Ratatouille (2007) Review

Image
Ratatouille (2007) 8/10 "In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends.”                                               -Anton Ego. Hello everyone and welcome to another movie review. As I’m continuing to revisit old movies I’ve seen before, I have finally reached another movie near and dear to me. Ratatouille first premiered at the Ko...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (PS3) Review

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (PS3) 7.5/10 Hello everyone and welcome to another game review. I have been revisiting another one of my all time favorite PS3 titles: Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut. Human Revolution was originally released on August 23, 2011, with the Director’s Cut version of the game released at a later date. The game was developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix. In this version, certain parts of the game have been fixed up, items and missions have been added, the DLC ‘The Missing Link’ is present, and the game even added a director’s commentary. This is the definitive version of the game, so I’ll be judging it by this version. Now, I have a history with this game. This and InFamous are probably my most played titles on the PS3. I have played this game religiously in the past, so I know it almost like the back of my hand and I even considered it to be one of my all time favorite games. Replaying it TWICE now, I fin...

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 1 [SUB] (2017) Review

Image
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 1 [SUB] (2017) 6.5/10 Don’t watch this. I’m being serious. Do not watch this. This show looks innocent but it’s disgusting and I’m here to tell you why. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a 13 episode anime that aired from January 11 - April 6, 2017 with a one episode OVA that aired on September 20, 2017. The season was produced by Kyoto Animation, of Clannad and K-On! fame. So I’ve heard mixed things on this show. “It’s so good! It’s a great SoL anime with a mixture of fantasy elements.” “This show is pedo bait and if you enjoyed it, you’re a pedophile too.” Yeah, this show is a mixed bag of weirdness. I have a lot to talk about, so let’s begin. Our story follows office worker Kobayashi on her way home from the bar. She’s drunk off her ass and misses her stop on the train. She ends up in the mountains and stumbles upon a dragon with a sword in her. The dragon is on her death bed and tells Kobayashi to go away, wanting to die in peace. Kobayashi t...

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) Review

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) 7/10 Hello everyone. Today, I’ll be revisiting the stoner classic Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. This movie was released on July 30, 2004 with the director being Danny Leiner. Now, I’ve seen this movie a couple of times before and my brother was feeling down, so I decided to watch this with him. Rewatching it, the movie still holds up with just how stupid it is, yet it’s written in a way that makes it a timeless classic. Also, I watched the unrated, “Extreme Version”, so I got to experience the whole thing. Anyway, let’s begin. Our story follows Harold, an office worker that was given a last minute assignment from his higher ups and is told to bring it in the next day. Kumar is very intelligent but not a very smart person. His father, a doctor, wants him to work in the medical field just like the rest of his family. Kumar, dealing with family pressure, just wants to sit at home and smoke weed all day. After a long day, the ...

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Seasons 1-2 [DUB] (2009) Review

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Seasons 1-2 (Fortune Cup/Dark Signer arcs) [DUB] (2008-2009) 8.5/10 “Let’s rev it up!” Hello everyone. Today, I’ll be going over the first season of Yugioh 5D’s. Seasons 1 and 2 aired from April 2, 2008 - June 24, 2009. The English dub for these were released at a later date, so those dates are from the JP dub. The show was produced by studio Gallop, who made the previous Yugioh series. 5D’s was legit one of my favorite shows growing up (I was 10 years old when this started airing). I loved the whole “card games on motorcycles” thing and it seemed to be telling an actual story as opposed to the previous series. With Yugi, he was trying to uncover the secrets of the Pharaoh and the Shadow games. Alright that’s very interesting, but the way the show was executed could’ve been done better. GX took a more “monster of the week” approach and had each season focus on a new villain and was an overall softer tone of the series, with the series being much more child-friendly...
