Aho-Girl [SUB] (2017) Review

 Aho-Girl [SUB] (2017) 6/10

Hello everyone. I’m back with another anime review. Today, I’ll be reviewing the short lived comedy anime Aho-Girl. Aho-Girl aired from July 4 - September 19, 2017 with the show only running at 12 episodes long. The show was produced by Diomedea. As you can tell, this is a fairly short anime and its quality doesn’t go a long way. I’ll be comparing this to other comedy anime that I’ve seen (Asobi Asobase, Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Konosuba, Pop Team Epic, and Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid). Just like with the show, I’m gonna try to keep this short. Let’s begin.

This is the life of the complete idiot known as Yoshiko Hanabatake. She is the biggest idiot that you will ever get to know. She never studies and constantly gets zeroes on her tests. She’s full of energy, loves to play, and loves bananas. She has no goals in life and no future. A complete idiot through and through. Our other main character is Akuru Akutsu (or A-kun as everyone calls him). He is the opposite of Yoshiko. He has goals, studies a lot, and is physically strong enough to damage Yoshiko whenever he needs to. A-kun reminds me a lot of Ryuji from Toradora. A-kun hates Yoshiko with every fiber of his being, but he’s stuck dealing with her because they are neighbors and they go to the same school. This whole show is about these two and their daily lives together. As the show continues, it’ll introduce seven other characters.

There is no actual story to this. Similar to Asobi Asobase, each episode consists of a couple of shorts, each one pertaining to a gig that they are doing. This show is filled to the brim with anime tropes. You have the beach episode, firework festival, the culture festival, lots of pervy moments (with panty shots and boob groping), and the overall craziness of these types of shows. My favorite character is A-kun. Dude just wants to live a peaceful life but has to deal with constant nuisances all the time. Another one of my favorites is Sayaka. She’s the sweetheart of the show. She befriends A-kun because she feels bad for him that his only other friend is Yoshiko. Yoshiko herself is decent, but my God can she be annoying. I know the show is focused around her, but damn I feel like they should’ve limited her character a bit. The very first short in the first episode was her best appearance. 3 minutes in and she’s talking about skid marks on her panties. Lmfao. My favorite shorts are: the first one, the one where A-kun and Dog bond over a movie, and where Yoshiko takes Dog on a walk and it becomes an Initial D reference.

The animation quality was a lot better than I expected. The art direction is bland as fuck, but fits the show very well, just like Saiki K. The music is completely forgettable. The OP is great tho. The opening animation changes with every episode, adding in on the insanity of the show. There is no ED unlike every other anime. The comedy of the show reminded a lot of Asobi Asobase and Tim and Eric. I’ll probably rank this on the lower tier of comedy anime that I’ve seen. If you are looking for something to distract you for a little bit or something light hearted and crazy to watch after watching something dark (like what I did with Wonder Egg Priority). This show is to not be taken seriously and it’s nothing but dumb fun. With that said, I feel like they did too many panty and boob molestation jokes. Got a little bit too much for me.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time

This is Zorgak, signing off.
