Accounting+ (PSVR) Review
Accounting+ (PSVR) 9/10
[THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK]
Hello everyone and welcome to my first (and possibly only) VR game review. Accounting+ was released on October 18, 2016 for the Oculus Quest, Playstation VR, and PC. The game was developed (published) by Crows Crows Crows, Squanch Games, and William Pugh. This game was such a trip to play through and going for that platinum trophy was definitely an experience. One of the writers for Rick and Morty had a hand in making this and it shows greatly. All throughout the game I was laughing at the dumbest stuff. Let’s jump into it.
You are the new accountant for Smiths and Smithersons and you are the first to experience accounting in VR! You put on your headset and you are transported to a virtual reality world. Problem is, it's not what it's suppose to be. Your bosses screwed up and sent you to an actual virtual world. It's your job to get back to the real world by joining street gangs, killing the VR king, summoning Satan, and assaulting tree people.
The story is absolute nonsense, but there's a method to the madness. My favorite part has to be the courtroom because of the endless dialogue. Also shout out to the tree guy level. This guy just wants to live in peace but your mere existence is disturbing him. He tells you to get the fuck out and it’s great. There’s plenty of other golden moments and I love how the story can have rippling effects depending on your choices.
The people behind this game are Justin Roiland (co-creator of Rick and Morty) and Crows Crows Crows studios (the people who made The Stanley Parable). With both parties making this game, it's a match made in heaven. The dialogue sounds like it's straight out of an episode of Rick and Morty with gameplay fairly similar to The Stanley Parable and I am all for it.
Gameplay is you picking stuff up, putting stuff down, interacting with objects, and warping. Nothing too special here besides basic VR gameplay. I did have trouble with the cursor several times where it would just drift off and not respawn in front of me, but nothing game breaking about it. Thankfully the game (or maybe Playstation themselves) planned for something like this. You can respawn the cursor in front of you, so this drifting thing isn’t all that bad.
There are two secret levels of this game that I want to go over, hence the spoiler warning. So the two secret areas are pretty great, despite the second being completely terrifying. The first one (I forgot how you get there) is that you warp into this room that looks like a meeting room. You start looking around when this clown on an office chair, smoking a cigarette bursts through the door. The more you look around the room, you'll notice that it looks like an investigation is going on (a wall filled with news article clippings with red yarn attaching the papers), messy paperwork everywhere, coffee stains, etc. The clown starts talking about that there's a secret zoo level hidden in the game and that he starts talking about the Accounting+ Discord trying to locate it and it's just hilarious. He ends it by asking you if you want to take the red pill or the blue pill.
The second secret level honestly scared the shit out of me. By using the apple VR headset the second time you're in the tree level, you'll be teleported into a dark room. You look around and you'll see this creepy looking guy (tall, extremely skinny, gray skin, and big enough to fit the room) in the corner of the room. You throw something at him and he takes off his VR goggles. He starts monologuing, telling us how much he loves Accounting+ while showing his terrible drawings of the characters. While he's talking, you have to grab the VR headset from his hand. After that, you'll be warped back to the beginning of the game. This was really unsettling for me because of the lighting, his character design, and the fact that I wasn't expecting it at all.
Now when I replayed this at a friend’s house, I stumbled upon ANOTHER hidden level. Idk if this was originally in the game or added in at a later date but this level was a glorious surprise for me. If I remember correctly (my memory is a bit foggy here), if you are at the VERY beginning of the game (where you are at Smiths and Smithersons but before you put on the first VR headset), there was a room that I traveled to. In an elevator, the game will take you to the basement and this whole area was fucking great. You have to stop your spaceship from blowing up by completing a series of puzzles in a time limit. This whole thing was excellently designed (both the writing, puzzles, and the level design) and I can’t commend it enough.
My only problem with the game is the cursor drifting off and that some of the dialogue can get really annoying (especially the tree guy. I know that's his thing, but still annoying). If you have a VR headset, you should definitely go pick this game up. It's also an easy platinum trophy with myself only clocking in a good 2 and a half hours of total playtime. It's a fun game and I highly recommend everyone to play this if you're into Rick and Morty style comedy and VR.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
