Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme (2007) Review

Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme (2007) 8/10

Hi everybody. Today, I’ll be going over another Marvel animated movie. Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme was released on August 14, 2007 with the directors being Patrick Archibald, Jay Olivia, Frank Paur, and Dick Sebast. Compared to Planet Hulk, this movie is so much better in terms of story, action, and animation. However I feel like the MCU Doctor Strange is a better movie. Let’s begin.

This is the origin story of Doctor Stephen Strange. Dr. Strange, a renowned neurosurgeon, suffers from a tragic car accident that renders his hands useless, leaving him unable to open a door properly let alone perform brain surgery. Searching all around the globe for a way to heal his injuries, he spends all of his money on doctor visits. On the verge of killing himself, a sorcerer named Wong approaches Strange, telling him to go to Tibet for healing. Once in Tibet, Strange starts to study the mystical arts in hopes of healing himself. While he's training, Dormammu, a demon of dark magic who resides within the Dark Dimension, threatens Earth with his approaching arrival. With the help of Wong and the other sorcerers, Dr. Strange must stop Dormammu before he comes to Earth.

The story here is pretty solid. No plot holes, no plot devices (from what I can tell). It's just a good, solid story. Can I just say I love Doctor Strange's origin. A pompous doctor forced to look inside himself and having to accept the unacceptable is amazing. Doctor Strange is the best character in this, although I didn't hate any one character. The movie has a good supporting cast with no useless characters.

Animation is actually pretty good here. I find it weird how this film has better art direction and animation than Planet Hulk considering that this movie came out 3 years prior. Action scenes are pretty good. I like the combination of magic and weapon based martial arts. This really shows you just how versatile sorcerers can be.

Music is decent here. Nothing outstanding, but it fits the mood of the movie perfectly. The voice cast is decent at best. Certainly better than Planet Hulk lmao. Best voices go to Bryce Johnson (Doctor Strange), Jonathan Adams (Dormammu), and Baron Mordo (Kevin Michael Richardson).

The movie does have a couple of problems though, but nothing major. First, I wish they showed Strange's training a bit more. Showing him how he learned all of those spells instead of a short montage. Second, I wish they extended the fight with Dormammu a bit longer. I barely remember it, which is a shame.

Overall, this is a great movie that gets overshadowed by everything else. Everyone should go watch it. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's still good in its own right. Until my next review, stay safe out there.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
