IT: Chapter 1 (2017) Review

 IT: Chapter 1 (2017) 9/10

Hello everyone and welcome to another movie review. Today, I’ll be going over the critically acclaimed horror movie IT. IT Chapter 1, based on the Stephen King novel, was released on September 8, 2017 with the director being Andres Muschietti. The movie was a box office hit and spawned a second, final movie that finished the story.

This has to be one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. I’ve always been interested in the killer demon clown and I’m glad I finally got around to watching this. The movie did not disappoint as it’s full of cool ideas, great characters, and terror filled moments that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. Let’s begin.

Our story follows 7 kids Bill, Richie, Stanley, Eddie, Beverly, Mark, and Ben as they investigate the disappearances of Derry Town's citizens. Along the way, the group will face their biggest fears in order to uncover the truth behind these disappearances, which seems to be tied to a mysterious clown that stalks the town.

I love the world building in this film. Every single character (whether main or side) helps flesh out the small town of Derry. Derry seems like it could be a real place and I wouldn't mind visiting it (without Pennywise of course). The time period that this movie takes place in (the 1980's) brings a certain charm to the movie that I love and helps give Derry Town a unique identity. I wonder how this town will be in the modern age. I also love Pennywise himself as he’s just a monster that feeds off of people’s fears. We’ll get to learn more about him in the next movie, but he’s a great villain nonetheless.

The acting is pretty good from a bunch of child actors. Everybody sold their parts very well. Best performance goes to Bill SkarsgĂ„rd who played Pennywise. Pennywise was so freaky and creepy but had a certain charm to him. Also shoutout to Sophia Lillis (Beverly) and Stephen Bogaert (Beverly’s father Mr. Marsh). The chemistry between these two was amazing. You felt for Beverly and you can feel her hate for her father. Also shout out to Jaeden Lieberher (Bill), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Ben), Finn Wolfhard (Richie), Jack Dylan Grazer (Eddie), Wyatt Oleff (Stan), and Nicholas Hamilton (Henry Bowers).

Set design was great too. The town of Derry, the well house, and all the different houses and locations look great. Cinematography is amazing too with plenty of great shots. One of my favorite shots is the slideshow scene where you slowly see Pennywise pop out.

Honestly, the best scene in the movie is the opening scene with Georgie, Pennywise, and the boat. The way the movie first starts up, the exposition with the boat building, the foreshadowing with the cellar, the pacing, the editing, the cinematography, the special effects, the acting. Everything about this first scene is perfect and I can not praise it enough.

The movie is almost perfect, though. Despite it being 2 hours and 15 minutes long, I do wish they fleshed out a couple of characters more (such as Mark and Harry) and showed us a little bit more of Pennywise's cruelty towards the town. Also I’m aware that a lot of details were cut or changed from the original book. I wish some of these were brought in for the movie.

Overall, the film is really good and I highly recommend it. IT Chapter 1 is a borderline masterpiece of a movie that everyone needs to go see. I can’t praise the movie enough and I will definitely be rewatching this in the future.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
