Planet Hulk (2010) Review
Planet Hulk (2010) 6/10
Hello everyone and welcome back to another Marvel movie. Planet Hulk was released on February 2, 2010 with the director being Sam Liu. Judging by when this movie was released, I’m assuming Disney was trying to cash in on DC’s animated movie market, but obviously that didn’t go so well. I’m gonna say this right now: this movie lowkey sucks. It has its share of moments, but the whole thing is just subpar at best. The number one issues are lack of content/detail and pacing. I’m gonna try and keep this short, so let’s begin.
After the Avengers exile Hulk into space for being a rage filled force of nature, Hulk crash lands on planet Sakaar where he is imprisoned by the local authority to fight in a colosseum in gladiator style battles. Fighting alongside new friends Korg, Miek, Elloe, and Hiroim, Hulk and co gain their freedom and lead a resistance against the tyrannical Red King.
Gotta say on paper, this story sounds amazing and is one of the best Marvel storylines as I've heard, but the way it's adapted in the movie is not great. Like the story is there, but it's obvious that the writers had to cut out some content from the comics. The story felt rushed and poorly paced. Had they made the movie longer and changed certain scenes, I'm pretty sure this would've fixed this problem. However, I did enjoy a couple of the characters (such as Miek, Caiera, and The Red King). These characters plus Hulk carried the movie and made it somewhat enjoyable. Everybody else is completely forgettable. I'd say the main problem with this movie is the lack of detail here. I want to know about Sakaar and its inhabitants. I want to know what an Oldstrong is (Caiera's plot armor) and why she is so strong, what the Spikes are, and the Red King's motivation for his rule. There's just so much detail and story points missing that it's kinda ridiculous.
Why the hell was Beta Ray Bill in this? Like he was only relevant in this for one fight, helped Hulk, then left. His whole character felt out of place here. Idk what his role was in the original story, but his whole appearance just doesn't sit right with me.
The art style and animation for this looks really cheap. 90% of the characters look bland, uninspired, or down right ugly, especially Korg. Music is nothing special. It just sounds like a typical action movie OST. All the voices here are forgettable as well. All except Rick D Wasserman, who voices Hulk.
The action scenes were honestly kinda awkward. In certain battles, you can see the enemies waiting to be struck down by the heroes. There was almost no tension in the fights.
The movie does get pretty bloody and brutal though. I was not expecting to see an insectoid's head get smashed in or the brutal transformation that the Red King took at the end of the movie. My favorite fight in the movie had to be Hulk vs Caiera when she was sent to hunt him down. We get to see just how powerful Caiera is compared to Hulk and it surprisingly caught me off guard.
Overall, this movie was a massive disappointment and it's a crying shame. When I first saw this years ago, I thought it was one of the best animated movies ever, but boy was I wrong. If you like Hulk and Marvel, you'd find some enjoyment here. But even then, if you are a fan of Hulk or the original Planet Hulk comic story, it’s hard for me to recommend this to even the most hardcore fans as this movie is simply not good. It’s an above average experience and you’ll have more enjoyment watching some of the MCU movies over this.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
