Hilda and The Mountain King (2021) Review

Hilda and The Mountain King (2021) 8/10

[THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!]

Hello everyone and welcome back to Hilda. Hilda and The Mountain King is a Netflix movie that was released on December 30, 2021 with the director being Andy Coyle, who is also the director for the show. This movie picks up right where season 2 ended with Hilda and Baba swapping bodies. Let’s jump right into this.

Immediately after the events of season 2, Hilda and Baba have swapped places. Baba is now a baby human while Hilda has turned into a troll. Hilda must adapt to her new lifestyle and find a way to get her body back and get back home to her mom. While she’s doing her thing, her mom is actively trying to find where she is and take care of the young toddler. While Hilda is trying to reverse her situation, she accidentally brings a new threat to Trolberg and must find a way to resolve the situation.

This is a great addition to the series. I feel like this movie would’ve been better had it gone deeper into Hilda and her mom’s separation. Also give us further depth into the troll mother’s actions and her overall character. This whole movie’s theme is about a mother’s love and it does that very well. I just think certain aspects of the movie could’ve been done better. Such as why exactly the king’s brother opposed him. The king wanted to awaken the mother to destroy Trolberg. They all wanted to go see their mother, so why did the brother oppose this? I highly doubt he wanted to protect the humans, especially all the shit the humans have done in the past. The brother never had a clear motive, even when the troll mom explained this whole thing. Also I feel like David and Frida could’ve had a larger part in the movie. Another thing: I do like how Ahlberg stepped down at the end of the movie, but I was hoping he had a bigger, what's the word…. Revelation? Shock? Detriment? Idk just something more that would knock his ass than a simple vision of what the trolls were after. I get it, but it feels like a cop out to me. Was really hoping Hilda or Gerda would rip him a new one and force him to see his actions fucked with everything.

But from what we got, it’s still a solid movie. Plot details and some much needed world building for the trolls, this movie is honestly great. Everything about the production value is nicely done too. Hell, I’d say this movie’s animation and whatnot had a slight upgrade, which is nice to see. Voice acting, music, and sound design is all great as well. I really love The Mountain King’s voice.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this and I’m curious where the series will run to next. Hilda and The Mountain King is a great movie, but it feels more like an extended episode, as with a lot of movies with this nature.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
