Hilda Season 2 (2020) Review
Hilda Season 2 (2020) 9/10
Hello everyone and welcome back to another Netflix review. Today I’ll be going over the second season of an absolute hidden gem, Hilda. Hilda season 2 aired on December 14, 2020, with the season clocking in at 13 episodes long. I’ve been putting off this season for a long time as I’ve just been interested in other stuff, but now I felt it was time to dive back into this magnificent world. Let’s begin.
Season 2 continues off where the first season ended. Hilda is still the adventurous kid that we all know and love. She’s still a Sparrow Scout and friends with David and Frida and lives with her mom, her pet deerfox Twig, and the tiny elf Alfur. In this season. We are introduced to new characters Erik Ahlberg and his second in command Gerda. Erik is the new head of public safety in Trolberg and immediately starts causing trouble for our characters. We also get some reoccurring characters such as the Librarian who now has a name (Kaisa) as well as Woodman. Similar to the previous season, there’s an overarching plot, with this season revolving around Erik and the trolls that’s surrounding the town. The season ends on a massive cliffhanger that the movie will go into.
I love this show. I love the characters, this world, the art direction, the animation, the music, the voice acting. Everything about it is fantastic. We got some further world building with this season with the introduction of the witches, draugen, and vikings as well as further development of the Nisse, deerfoxes, and elves. Hilda also got some character development, Frida is learning magic, David is slowly becoming more courageous, and the mom is becoming best mom in cartoon history. Kaisa became a very nice surprise and the whole witch thing was very interesting. Back to Hilda real quick. I love how her actions caught up with her. Constantly lying to her mom, going on these dangerous adventures finally bit her in the ass and I loved seeing this strain on her character. There was even friction between her and her mother. Overall the writing and pacing and characters for the season are very nicely done. However, I do wish that Erik got chewed out or suffered from his own incompetence and ego at the end, but hopefully that’ll pop up later.
There is one episode I need to go over. Episode 9 “The Deerfox”. In this episode, Twig runs away as he feels Hilda is neglecting and forgetting about him. Hilda and her mom go out to find him. The way this episode ended literally brought a tear to my eye. It was a very touching episode and the way they did Twig’s home was nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful. I don’t want to spoil what happens as it's a thing of beauty and needs to be witnessed.
One thing I love about this show is how it treats the viewer. This show is geared towards young children, like what you would see on Cartoon Network, but it doesn’t treat its audience like a bunch of mindless idiots. The show is full of fun and action packed moments but isn’t afraid to show off some emotional moments and give some life lessons. The show goes into important lessons about lying and trust and the beauty of nature. As far as I’m concerned, this show is slowly reaching the level of competence and excellent writing as Avatar and Teen Titans, which is VERY difficult to reach that echelon.
Overall this is a fantastic addition to this wonderful show and I can’t wait to dive into the movie. If, for whatever reason, you were iffy about watching this because maybe you didn’t enjoy season 1, go give this show another chance. Hilda is an excellent show and I can’t believe this show isn’t as big as it should.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
