Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train [SUB] (2020) Review

Demon Slayer The Movie - Mugen Train [SUB] (2020) 8/10

[THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!]

Hello everyone. Today, I’ll be going over the critically acclaimed anime movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Mugen Train was released on October 16, 2020 with the director being Haruo Sotozaki. Ufotable is the animation studio behind the film, who also did the first season of the show. Let me just say, I was hyped for this movie. I really enjoyed the first season and I’ve heard nothing but praise about the film. I went in with high expectations and this movie did not disappoint. Let’s begin.

So immediately after where season one ends is where this film begins. Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke jump on the train and meet the Flame Pillar, Kyojuro Rengoku. They’re mission is to find out what’s happening with the Mugen Train and why 40 people have gone missing. As the movie progresses, they’ll get to the bottom of this little investigation and then a new threat will pop up.

The story for the movie is very simple. The movie gets straight into the action like maybe 10-15 minutes in and it doesn’t stop. Everything leading up to the film's climax was pretty solid. I enjoyed the fight with Enmu and the different dreams everyone had were both entertaining and emotional. The best part of the movie was after the train crash, with Rengoku vs Akaza. This fight was amazing and I was not expecting it at all. Rengoku went out like a badass and I was hoping he would be able to finish the job. I am noticing a trend with the show, but I’m going to hold my tongue until my review for season 2. Overall solid writing and I hope the next installment will build up what was done here.

The fight scenes were top tier and are easily the best part of the movie. I was also very surprised by the music for the film too. Akaza’s theme was lit and fit him perfectly. Animation and art style are on the same level as the show. On one hand, I don’t mind because the show already looks great, but on the other hand I was hoping it would get a slight upgrade (like a touch up with animation and shading), but oh well. I was also hoping Zenitsu and Nezuko would get more screen time too. Overall, this is an excellent continuation to the show and I highly recommend it. This is how you do an anime movie and all other movies should follow in Ufotable’s footsteps. I can’t wait for season 2.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
