6 Underground (2019) Review
6 Underground (2019) 5.5/10
Hello everybody and welcome to another movie review. Today’s review will be on the Netflix film 6 Underground. The movie was released on December 13, 2019 with the director being none other than Michael Bay. I’ve had my eye on this film for quite some time and I gotta say, it’s an average movie. It reminds me a lot of the game series Just Cause. Let’s begin.
Our film follows a tech billionaire who faked his death so that he can pursue an evil dictator without being chained by society. You see, this guy (played by Ryan Reynolds) is a billionaire philanthropist who is a genuinely good person. After a visit to the country of Turgistan, he witnesses its dictator Rovach Alimov bomb his own people with white phosphorus. After seeing this atrocity, he wants to do some more for this world. Later, he fakes his death and becomes a ghost to society. Wanting to actually do good for the world instead of basic charity, he forms a group of operatives who share his vision in changing the world and he begins his mission to overthrow dictator Rovach.
The concept for the movie is actually pretty cool and it was executed somewhat well. My problem with the movie is that it’s constantly jumping around with its plot. One moment it’ll focus on the main narrative then the next scene will be a backstory to one of the group members. The pacing is pretty shit. It’s not unwatchable as the second half of the film seemed to hold my attention more, but placing the scenes where they are was a mistake. Rearrange the scenes, have it be more linear, and give a little more backstory to a couple of the characters, and the movie would be instantly better.
The main reason why I seemed to even have this on my list was because of Ryan Reynolds. I like the guy and his work in Deadpool was awesome. Now, because this is Ryan Reynolds, I was expecting this movie to have a lot of Deadpool-esque comedy and that is the case. One second it’s all serious and then the next second the movie is cracking jokes. This is another issue I have with the movie. It’s constantly making jokes at the most inappropriate times. There’s a lot of pop culture references here and honestly a lot of the jokes didn’t hit me because I was too focused on what was going on.
Another issue I have with the movie is in the first scene. There’s this massive car chase throughout Florence, Italy. One of the characters got shot and is bleeding out. How tf is she not dead? You’re going top speed on the roads, swerving and circling everywhere, how did she not at least pass out from blood loss. Also, why tf was the doctor chick not making the wound worse through all of the commotion. This whole part made no sense. The chick should be dead. Instead, she’s still shooting and standing up like it’s nothing. Complete bullshit.
I don’t have the patience to continue, so I’ll wrap it up here. It’s an average movie and I can only recommend it if you’re bored. I do like the concept and it has its touching moments, but it could be so much better. Ryan Reynolds was the best part of the film. Everything else was eh. Anyway, I’ll see you next time.
Thanks for reading.
