Joseph: King of Dreams (2000) Review
Joseph: King of Dreams (2000) 5/10
Hello everyone. Today, I’ll be going over Joseph: King of Dreams. This movie was released on November 7, 2000 with the directors being Robert C. Ramirez and Rob LaDuca. The movie was also done by DreamWorks, who did Prince of Egypt before this. I gotta say right now, I’m not a fan of this movie. It just feels like events happening. It’s not actually conveying a story unlike Prince of Egypt. Let’s just jump into this.
This story is an adaptation of the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. Joseph was born into a fairly large family in Canaan. His mother was told that she would not be able to have children, but through a miracle, Joseph was born. Because of this, he is favored by his parents, learning Egyptian and gaining knowledge for a better life. Because of this, his brothers grow jealous of this favoritism. One night, Joseph has a dream and learns that he can predict the future through these dreams and he can also interpret other people’s dreams. His brothers eventually grow jealous enough that one day, they push him down a hole and then later sell him into slavery in Egypt. Joseph is then forced to work for one of Pharaoh’s assistants, Potiphar. Joseph eventually proves himself to Potiphar and becomes his right hand man. After a fateful night with Potiphar’s wife, Joseph is thrown into jail. Eventually, Potiphar gets Joseph to interpret Pharaoh’s dream. Thanks to this interpretation, Joseph becomes regent of Egypt and supervises crop production. 20 years have passed since Joseph was sold into slavery. Joseph’s old family comes to Egypt in need of food. Joseph exacts his revenge on his old family, but learns that they resent their decision. Joseph accepts their apology and has them relocate to Egypt for a better life. Movie ends.
This movie is severely disappointing. Like I said earlier, the movie feels like it’s just showing what happened in Joseph’s story. Doesn’t feel like they are actually telling a story. Another issue I have is that the movie is suppose to be about Joseph's dreams and his ability to interpret dreams. This is only brought up a handful of times, making it seem like his ability is just there. The entire film just feels like it’s filler for what’s to be brought up in Prince of Egypt. No substance at all. I could really care less about the entire cast except for Joseph and Potiphar. All of his brothers, his mother, his father, his wife, everyone is just there for Joseph to bounce off of.
The art direction is somehow worse than Prince of Egypt even though this came out two years after that movie. The visuals look so uninspired and they look like they would be on one of these weird children’s cable shows that’s in between channels. Character designs, backgrounds, and environments all look bland.
The music for the movie is trash as well. All of the musical songs are terrible. Straight garbage. They just don’t sound like actual compositions. They’re just singing the plot because they didn’t know how to write a song like with Prince of Egypt. Also, why is Ben Affleck and Mark Hamill in this? So weird. The voice cast is uninspired too. No voices stood out to me.
This movie is painfully average and I will be forgetting about this in the future. I can not recommend this unless you want to watch another Christian movie. Joseph: King of Dreams is an average movie at best and I feel like I wasted my time watching this. I didn’t learn anything nor appreciate anything from this movie. Please, don’t watch this.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
