Monster Girl Doctor [DUB] (2020) Review
Monster Girl Doctor [DUB] (2020) 6/10
Hello and welcome to another anime review. Today, I’ll be going over a monster medical anime, Monster Girl Doctor. MGD is a 12 episode anime series that ran from July 12 - September 27, 2020, with the studio behind this being Arvo Animation. Upon its release, it kinda just came and went, just like many other seasonal anime. Despite its underperformance and mixed ratings, I still wish we’d get another season at some point. Let’s begin.
Our story follows Glenn Litbeit and his assistant Saphenitite “Sapphee” Neikes as they run a monster medical clinic. In this world, humans and monsters were at war with each other for a hundred years. Eventually, the two sides forgot the reason why they were fighting in the first place, so they stopped. With the help of Skadi Dragenfelt, a rare dragon, a city was made in which both humans and monsters alike can live together peacefully. In the city of Lindworm, our protagonist Glenn will be treating all sorts of monsters, and in doing so, he will be building a fucking harem out of his patients. This will include a Lamia, Centaur, Mermaid, Cyclops, Arachne, Harpy, a Flesh Golem, and even Skadi herself.
There is no overarching story for this show. Each episode is basically self contained until the final episodes that have to do with Skadi. The main focal point for the show are the monsters and the medical side of the show. Glenn is a great doctor, but he gets so focused on his work that he fails to see that he makes his patients somewhat uncomfortable with his examinations. I do like the medical mysteries with a couple of the patients. I will say, I do feel like the show oversexualized a couple of characters and certain moments, like when he was examining Lulala the mermaid. He straight up fingered her gills and it got really awkward. Or when he was treating Lorna the centaur. He put her in a bondage outfit for medical reasons and she was really liking it. I do like the characters for the show, with Sapphee being my favorite character.
There is one major issue I have with the show. So Glenn’s final patient for the season is Skadi herself. She has a tumor on her heart and he and Cthulhy (his mentor) need to perform surgery on her. At first, Skadi didn't want to go through with the surgery for personal reasons, but eventually he was able to convince her. There were three episodes of build up for this surgery and we only see it for like 3 minutes. I was expecting them to go in full detail with the surgery, showing every detail and possible mishaps with the procedure. They even did further character development for Sapphee and Arahnia for them to help with the surgery. They could’ve even done further development for the cast as they are performing. Such a wasted opportunity. And at the end of it all, Skadi starts calling Glenn Big Brother, which is fucking weird. Even Glenn is put off by it.
The show’s art direction is great. I love the character designs for everyone. Sapphee, Tisalia, Lulala, Illy (post-molt), Meme, and especially Skadi. I found her design to be the best. The way they incorporated a human body and merged it with dragon characteristics was awesome. I love her color scheme too.
There is a lot of fan service here. Over half of the characters have massive tits and the medical exams can get pretty raunchy. Hell, the very first scene of the show is Glenn checking a female Minotaur’s breasts. Or when Meme collapsed from heat exhaustion, Glenn cuts her top in half to let her breasts breathe. Unfortunately the animation itself is nothing too crazy. They did use some 3D animation to save budget, but thankfully this didn’t look terrible.
Music is average. No tunes or anything stuck out to me. The OP and ED are basic anime shit that I could care less about. I watched this in the English dub and the voice acting isn’t too bad. My favorite voices are Tisalia (Julia McIlvaine), Sapphee (Cristina Vee), Lulala (Ryan Bartley), Illy (Kira Buckland), and Glenn (Griffin Puatu). I will say, in the early episodes, the voice acting was trash. Just felt like they were reading the script instead of actually acting out the lines. This seemed to be fixed as the season continued. Arahnia’s voice is absolute trash though. I know there's a reason why she has a southern accent, but holy shit this was terrible.
Overall, this was a nice show. Not the best thing ever, but it was entertaining. I will be keeping up with this show once season 2 gets announced (hopefully). There’s so much more they can do with this world and more medical practices to explore. If you want a short anime series to check out while you’re waiting for something else, go check this out, but be aware that it’s very ecchi. Until next time, stay frosty.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
