Goodfellas (1990) Review
Goodfellas (1990) 10/10
Hello and welcome to another movie review. As I continue to re-evaluate some of my old reviews, I’ll come across a film that I feel I’ll need to rewatch, as I feel my old thoughts don’t align with my current state of mind. Goodfellas is one of those movies. Based on the book “Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi, Goodfellas premiered at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990. The movie was written and directed by Martin Scorsese, and written as well by the book’s author Nicholas Pileggi. Goodfellas is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time, and was even put into the National Film Registry.
The last time I saw this, I enjoyed it, but didn’t understand why it was so special. Rewatching it now, I just didn’t fully understand what was going on here. This is quite honestly one of the best movies I have ever seen and I might even consider it to be a masterpiece of cinema. Idk if I would put this as a personal favorite, but I can see why Goodfellas is so beloved. Let’s begin.
Taking place in the mid-1900’s, this is the life story of an Irish-American man named Henry Hill. From a young age while still in school, meeting his wife, having a family, and eventually getting wrapped up in the nasty junk, Henry will live the life he has always dreamed of: the life of a gangster. From doing odd jobs for the don Paulie Cicero to making his own moves with the likes of Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito, Henry will be rolling in money, family, and plenty of drugs. As tensions begin to run high and trust begins to shake, Henry will need to look over his back even around his closest friends.
Yeah this was a great story. I especially love how the movie is paced, keeping you engaged every step of the way. I love all of the characters, with my favorites being Henry and Jimmy. Tommy is a great character too, but he’s such an ass lmao. Great characters, great writing, great pacing, and I also love just how the story envelops you in the world of gangsters. Just a great, fun movie.
Another thing that makes this such a compelling movie is its production. Scorsese’s camera work and the screenplay itself are just immaculate. I love the music, especially with some Eric Clapton lol, and everything else too. Phenomenal performances from everyone. Ray Liotta (Henry) (RIP), Robert De Niro (Jimmy), Poe Pesci (Tommy), Lorraine Bracco (Karen Hill), Paul Sorvino (Paulie Cicero), Frank Vincent (Billy Batts), and Debi Mazar (Sandy).
Goodfellas is just one of those movies that’s great because it’s great. I don’t need to write out every aspect because the movie is that fucking solid. It’s a gangster movie full of action, drama, romance, and lots of wiseguys, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Until my next review, stay frosty.
Thanks for reading.
This is Zorgak, signing off.
