IP MAN (2008) Review

 IP MAN (2008) 8/10

Hello everyone. Today, I’ll be going over the classic martial arts film Ip Man. Ip Man was originally released on December 18, 2008 with the director being Wilson Yip. I’ve been meaning to watch this movie for the longest time and I figured now would be a good time to do it. We all know this movie, so I’m going to try and keep this short. Let’s begin.

Our story takes place in Fo Shan, China in the year 1935. Our story follows Ip Man, a martial arts master that teaches the fighting style Wing Chun. The movie starts off with him living his esteemed life as a martial arts master, with everyone treating him with proper respect and looking up to him. Soon enough, a group of people from out of town show up and start fighting and beating the other martial arts masters. The leader of the group eventually challenges Ip Man, with our MC beating him with ease. Two years pass, with the Japanese military invading and occupying this region of China. Times become extremely difficult as Ip Man is forced to start actually working at a coal factory. Eventually, Ip Man fights ten Japanese martial artists and beats them in front of General Miura. Piquing his interest, Miura would like to have Ip Man train the Japanese soldiers in Chinese kung fu, but he refuses. This will lead to a challenge between the two men that will decide which country has the better martial arts skills and overall pride in one’s country.

The story is good and the characters are decent (with my favorite probably being Wong Fan [leader of the out-of-town people]). He reminded me of Ryuzo from Ghost of Tsushima a bit. The movie looks great too. You can tell that future martial arts movies took a lot of inspiration from this film (first one coming to mind would be The Raid). I love the tone shift between the first 20-30 minutes and the rest of the film. It’s all happy, slice of life-ish and then it does a complete 180, showcasing the struggles of occupancy and wartime. The action and choreography is really good and is the highlight of the film. My favorite fight is probably Ip Man vs Wong Fan or Ip Man vs the 10 Japanese men. I found Ip Man vs the robbers at the cotton factory to be the weakest fight of the movie.

Overall, this is a great movie and everyone should go check this out. Great action, good story, and great visuals. If you are looking for a martial arts movie, then go check this out. I probably won’t be touching the sequels.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
