Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) Review

Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) 6.5/10

Hello and welcome to another movie review. Today, I’ll be going over the cult classic film Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Originally a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, this movie was released on August 31, 2010 with the director being Edgar Wright. Now, I have seen this series talked about a lot, especially with the game getting two separate releases within the past couple of years as well as the Netflix series. I’m not too familiar with the story, so this was my first exposure to it, and I gotta say, I am severely disappointed with what I had watched. This has got to be one of the most overrated movies I have ever seen. Let’s begin.

Our story takes place in Toronto, Canada. Our hero is Scott Pilgrim. Scott Pilgrim is in his early 20’s and is dating a high school girl named Knives Chau. Scott is also in an angsty teen rock band with a couple of his friends called The Sex Bomb Ombs. One night, Scott has a dream of a girl that he deems to be “the girl of his dreams”. After a fateful encounter with said girl, he learns that her name is Ramona Flowers. He then starts to date her, cheating on Knives in the process. He then learns that if he is to continue to date her, he needs to defeat her 7 evil exes. While doing this, Scott and Ramona must face their troubled past relationships and deal with other obstacles.

Okay, before I go into this, let me say this. This is a decent concept for a story. I probably didn’t enjoy this as much as the next guy because I’m not an angsty teen with relationship issues. With that said, I found the whole relationship issues fucking dumb. First off, my main issue is that Scott should’ve broken up with Knives BEFORE he started dating Ramona. Basic relationship 101. Second, the whole “I gotta fight your seven exes to date you properly” sounds really stupid, but was entertaining because of how entertaining the fights were. I don’t know, I guess relationship movies just aren’t my thing. Honestly, I was expecting the seven exes to represent the seven deadly sins cause that’s a common trope with the number. A part of me is disappointed that that’s not the case but at the same time it was refreshing. The movie also blends in real life with video game logic and it makes no fucking sense. The worst part about the movie is that it skips over a lot of the details from the source material. After doing some light research, this movie should’ve been broken up into maybe 2 movies. Scott, Ramona, Knives, and all of the exes felt shallow as fuck and I do not care for them.

The movie looks decent. Drawing heavy inspiration from comic books, the movie utilizes a lot of comic book connotations and whatnot. Visually, the movie is entertaining. Too bad the story didn’t grip me all that much.

The fights were actually decent, at least a couple of them. My favorites are Chris Evans and The Vegan. These were hilarious and the highlight of the movie. Music is more angsty teen bullshit that I do not care for. The acting is actually decent. Michael Cera was great. I didn’t care for the actress that played Ramona though. All of the exes (minus the twins and the chick) were decent antagonists, with Chris Evans and the Vegan guy were the best performances from the bunch.

Overall, it’s an okay movie at best. I’m probably not the best to discuss this movie as I feel like I didn’t “enjoy it properly” or some shit like that. That, and I have better shit to watch. However, I am glad that I finally got to watch this and see what all the hubbub was about. I’m probably not going to be touching the game nor the Netflix series either, even if that does fix my issues with the movie. If you like this, more power to you, but I genuinely didn’t care for Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Anyway, thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time.

This is Zorgak, signing off.
